Oregon Coast April 2015

Weekend in Oregon Bookended with Time in Seattle
Thursday night in Seattle gave us a jump on the weekend. This is some space needling thingy we found on an after dinner walk... Bright, early Friday morning down at Pike Place Market before any other tourists arrived. April is prime tulip time at the flower stalls. Poor light in the early morning, but I tried to get a few detailed images. Some areas received a bit of filtered light, but it was still quite dark. An amazing variety of colors... which looked better after a pastry break at La Panier while waiting for the improved light.
Some iris blooms were also available. These are grown locally (like many of the tulips). Sunlight finally creeps into one corner of the market. After a nice night and morning in Seattle, a long drive to the beach ends at our weekend getaway on the Pacific. Saturday morning and still sunny. A young Peregrine falcon (a recent fledge?) warms up in the sun on the cliffs of Cape Foulweather. Moolack Beach as the thin morning fog burns off. Yaquina Head in the distance. Salal in bloom right off the beach.
On Stan's coffee shop deck, Yvonne counts ~90 California sea lions. So loud, it was hard to converse... Enjoy the natural sounds of sea lions whispering sweet nothings to each other... Fighting for space is exhausting. A food chain collapse in CA has kept them in OR in big numbers. A dollar floats toward the sea lions. I didn't think it would be a good idea to fetch it out... Back to our deck for some warm afternoon sun, a cold wind, and some awful margartias. Much to our disappointment, the Depoe Bay whale fountain didn't spout for us this evening.
Depoe Bay, OR sunset. Sunday morning -- still sunny. Left my dSLR battery back at the beach house, so here's an iPhone snap of the Yaquina Head lighthouse (new paint job). Walking to the Hecta Head light house, wild roses are already blooming. As seen many times before (perhaps not this distorted), the 1894 Heceta Head Light. A short walk in the woods gets you above the light. It's the brightest lighthouse on the OR coast. Tough leaf iris (Iris tenax) along the side of the trail.
Never fear, we rescued this snail on the trail and set him over to the edge. A look at the 1st order Fresnel lens. Yvonne takes a beach walk break on Washburn Beach. Only broken sand dollars found this morning. Back to Newport and Stan's for a beverage and sea lion barking. Flippers in the air for cooling. They raft up for mutual protection when at sea. Strange to see them sleep that way.
Foggy Monday morning at the beach, so lets go back to Seattle and enjoy some sun. Yvonne on her favorite bench at Olympic Sculpture Park. The view of Elliot Bay from the bench. Hot, hot, hot! First 70+ day of the year. Children's sculpture garden at Seattle Center. Rhododendrons blooming near Pacific Science Center. A nice walk up to Kerry Park provides a view before heading back to Bellingham reality.
